VAT is chargeable at 17.5% on these fees.  In addition, there are certain charges, known as disbursements, which are common to all transactions and which are unavoidable.  Typical disbursements (with costs shown inclusive of VAT) are shown below.  Those marked (variable) will change dependent on the location of the property.

Stamp duty is without doubt the major potential disbursement on any purchase (it is not payable on a sale).  Again the amount paid depends on the purchase price.  The bands are as follows and the percentage shown is charged on the full price.  For instance the cost on a purchase of £300,000 is £9,000.
